Our Music Traditions Return; Hear a Report Card for Every Child Promise

Two of the community’s favorite holiday traditions return this week at the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library.

The Springfield Symphony’s Brass Quintet will perform holiday music for adults at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, in the upstairs meeting room. This annual concert is sponsored by the Friends of the Library, and refreshments will be served.

On Friday, Dec. 14,  the Courthouse Chorale will perform holiday favorites for adults at 12:30 p.m. This vocal ensemble of Greene County officials and employees will perform while you enjoy light refreshments.

The Library is a partner with all parents in teaching activities that help their children be ready to learn when entering school. There’s another partner in this effort – Every Child Promise – and two of its advocates take the stage at 6 p.m. Thursday Dec. 13, in the Library Center’s meeting rooms A and B to talk about their progress so far.

Dana Carroll, Springfield child advocate, and author Todd Parnell will give a 30-minute presentation, Keeping a Community Promise, about what Every Child Promise has accomplished so far in helping families help their children be ready to learn.

Parnell will also talk about his novel commissioned for the project. "Privilege and Privation, A Love Story" explores the relationships between the poor and middle class in our region. Books will be available for purchase and signing, with all proceeds going to Every Child Promise Endowed Scholarship Fund.

And keeping our own promise, we’ve assembled a list of librarian-tested “Favorite New Books of 2018” for you after a survey of our library staffers. The list includes 23 titles that span the genres, from mystery to biography, from fantasy to nonfiction.

You may have read some of them in the last year, but it’s likely you missed others that librarians say you’ll enjoy before the 2019 books make their debut.

You can find the printed list at all of the 10 library branches, or print off your list at https://thelibrary.org/documents/staff-favorites-2018.pdf. Find one that interests you, and reserve a copy at thelibrary.org/catalog.
