This Week at the Library: History, Travel, Yoga and Bridge

The week ahead holds some revealing history lessons, a trip for armchair travelers, and ways to flex your muscles and your brain – all at the Library.

The ongoing History Explorer series features Benjamin Franklin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, in the Library Center auditorium. It’s presented in partnership with the Sons of the American Revolution. We know him as a scientist, inventor, diplomat and statesman. Learn about the man who helped draft the Declaration of Independence and negotiated the treaty that ended the Revolutionary War, and discover his role at the convention that produced the U.S. Constitution.  For more information call 882-0714.

Explore a new place, or get ideas for a European vacation, at the Brown Bag Travelogue at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Schweitzer Brentwood Branch. See the benefits of yoga during a series of 30-minute yoga sessions through January by Jes Scott, certified yoga instructor. Adults are welcome at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, and each Wednesday through Jan. 30 in the Library Center auditorium. All skill levels are welcome; bring your own mat or towel. Each session will also address the benefits of yoga and how to practice mindfulness. For details call 882-0714.

Beneath the buildings and blacktop of present-day Springfield are key sites related to the January 8, 1863 Battle of Springfield and other Civil War-era events. At 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Schweitzer Brentwood Branch, Local History Associate John Rutherford discusses what those key sites were, where they are today, and what Springfield looked like during the Civil War.
