One Read Events Feature Fun and Learning; How-To Festival March 30 at Library Center

"Circe" by Madeline Miller is the Library's 2019 One Read title. If you never thought mythology had anything to do with the #MeToo movement, read on.

The upcoming week brings a mix of adult programs offering a modern take on mythology in honor of the One Read title “Circe” by Madeline Miller. It’s our once-a-year, one book, one community celebration, and we hope you’ll read the book and join us. You can see the full schedule at thelibrary.org/oneread.

Tuesday, March 26, at 7 p.m. at the Schweitzer Brentwood Branch is a panel, Pushing Back: From Circe to #MeToo. The stories of Circe, Captain Marvel and the #MeToo movement all revolve around women speaking up and fighting back. We’re playing host to Missouri State University professors Dr. Erin Kenny, Michael Frizell and Dr. Holly Holladay as they connect centuries-old powerful female deities, modern American-made superheroines and current movements in the media for a stirring discussion of female power and where we go from here.

Wednesday, March 27, take a break for a travelogue with a local, modern-day Odysseus at 7 p.m. at the Schweitzer Brentwood Branch.

For three months in 2017, Drury University’s Jalen Price lived on the island of Aegina in Greece, studying architecture and traveling to Athens, Thessaloniki, Meteora and Nafplio. Jalen will discuss his perceptions before going to Greece, his experiences there and how he’s grown from his personal “Greek Odyssey.”

Love trivia and mythology? Join Clash of the Trivia Titans on Friday, March 29, from 7-9 p.m. at Missouri Spirits, 507 W. Walnut St., for adults age 21 and older. Recruit and register a team of three to six, then prove your trivia prowess. Prizes will be awarded to the top team. It’s free to participate, but be sure to register now at 883-5341.
