Now You Can Help a Librarian at Your Favorite Branch
So many of the extras you enjoy at the library branches – the multi-media Magic Box at the Library Center, seasonal wine tastings, a visit by Newbery Honor Medalist Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, books for Summer Reading Program rewards – happen through the quiet work of the Library Foundation and generous donors.
Greene County’s property tax supports the basic operation of the 10 branches, the Mobile Library and their services. Gifts sent through the Library Foundation extend the Library’s capacity to provide some of those extras that patrons expect and need for their families and themselves.
We know that many patrons have a “favorite” branch, or “home branch,” and many of them are so invested in their library, they’re at the ready to help when a need arises. So the Library Foundation just rolled out a fun way to respond to branch needs with a program, Help-a-Librarian.
We describe it on the newly redesigned Library Foundation page, foundation.thelibrary.org. The new design makes it easy to navigate and find the many ways to give through the foundation, whether it’s for endowments and funds, planned giving or, now, Help-a-Librarian.
Periodically, we’ll feature up to three small and large projects that a librarian has identified as a need in the branch. The page will describe the item, the cost and what branch needs it. If you’re so moved, you can donate online immediately through the foundation page, or during a visit to that particular branch.
The first three needs include a new train engine and regular cleaning on the Library Station model train for $500; a giant play parachute for children’s programs at the Schweitzer Brentwood Branch for $99; and a children’s area rug at the Fair Grove Branch for $380.
"Librarians are creative people who do amazing work with limited resources,” says Development Director Melissa Adler. “Help-a-Librarian projects are the perfect way to support librarians by funding items they need for their branches. Take a look at the projects and find one that's meaningful to you. Encourage friends and co-workers to chip in and together we can get these projects done!"
