Relive the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, and Learn What's So Good About Horror

Early on July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins were snug atop the Saturn V rocket on a launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center. At 9:32 a.m. EDT, the engines fired, and within minutes Apollo 11 cleared the tower and the crew rocketed into history.

You can relive those moments during a live, national webcast to celebrate NASA’s 50th anniversary of Apollo 11’s historic moon landing at 3 p.m. Monday, July 15,  for all ages at the Library Station, Park Central Branch and Fair Grove Branch libraries.

The webcast includes a guided recreation of Apollo 11's journey to see how this mission was executed by crew members and mission control in Houston. The event is provided by the STAR Library Network’s NASA@ My Library program in partnership with the American Museum of Natural History.

For some of us, reading anything in the horror genre requires lights on, locked doors. If you haven’t tried it yet, we invite you to sample our series, Summer Scares. It’s a national initiative of the Horror Writers Association, Book Riot, Library Journal and United for Libraries to encourage readers to sample the genre and a new generation of horror authors.

We couldn’t do that without offering some fun programs and introducing you to one of horror’s darlings, Daniel Kraus. The New York Times best-selling author will give a talk for teens and adults at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 18, in the Library Center auditorium. Among his works, Kraus co-authored the novelization of the film “The Shape of Water” with Guillermo del Toro. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

The series continues through July with more programs. For details call 616-0531.
