Resources Aid Visually Impaired; Library Programs Offer New Skills and Insight

A library visitor recently explained how he couldn’t get by without the library’s collection of audiobooks. They are his entertainment, education and lifeline. He is a voracious reader. And he is blind.

It was a gentle reminder about the impact this single service has on people’s lives. He also shared that he couldn’t afford to buy all the audiobooks he goes through in a month’s time. (We did some calculation: Checking out only five audiobooks a month would save him about $250 according to the Library Use Value Calculator on the library website.)

If someone you know has stopped enjoying books because of a visual impairment, suggest they check out audiobook CDs or download them on their device through the digital collection – Hoopla, OverDrive, Libby and RB Digital (thelibrary.org/digital). Audiobooks feature fiction and nonfiction titles.

Our visitor wasn’t aware of another service – the Wolfner Library, sos.mo.gov/wolfner. It’s a free service for Missourians who are unable to use standard print materials due to a visual or physical disability. Materials are mailed to and from library patrons’ homes, postage paid, no charge to the patron. It offers fiction and nonfiction audio, braille and large-print books for all ages and magazines, and Wolfner loans playback machines for those using audiobooks.
