Greenlawn Cemetery

New Cemetery to Open

"Judge Ben J. Diemer is establishing a cemetery on the north side of town at the northern extremity of Springfield Avenue. [Now National Avenue.] The cemetery is to comprise forty acres, of which ten acres are already platted. There is to be a gate way entrance forty feet wide facing on Springfield Avenue, from which a forty foot driveway will extend, traversing the entire tract. The blocks will consist of thirty-six 20 foot lots and around each block there will be a street twenty feet wide, while a five foot walk will extend around each lot.

"Mr. Diemer has contracted for two hundred hard maples and one hundred evergreens to be set out during November. The whole cemetery is to be nicely fenced. This tract of land stands high and dry, has a natural drainage and is perfectly suited for a burying ground. The name of the new cemetery is Green Lawn."
