We Have Books for Adults Learning to Read, and You Can Help
Learning to read can transform a person’s life. And with so many people sheltering at home during the pandemic, reading can take us places we can't go right now.
The Springfield-Greene County Library District has a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction titles for adult learners called the Adult Literacy Collection.
The main collection is housed at the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library, 397 E. Central St. Some copies are also available at other library branches, or one search thelibrary.org/catalog, keyword “Literacy Collection.”
The books cover life skills, cooking, biographies, self-help, budgeting and fiction for adults; and children’s titles for the adult learner.
The collection selected through a partnership of the Ozarks Literacy Council and the Library, with funds from the Adult Literacy XPRIZE Communities Competition.
The Library has a natural partnership with the Ozarks Literacy Council, which is housed in the lower level of the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library, 397 E. Central St. The council provides free tutoring for children and adults in southwest Missouri. Tutors often make use of the Adult Literacy Collection housed in the Library.
Currently, OLC is seeking volunteers willing to give one hour a week to help open doors for an adult by teaching them to read. Due to the COVID-19 social distancing concerns, tutors and students can meet face-to-face as well as online.
The next tutor training session is Saturday, Aug. 8 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Springfield. The training will be from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Breakfast snacks, lunch and all materials needed at that time will be provided. Social distancing will be maintained, and masks and antibacterial wipes will be available. If you are interested in attending, register at info@ozarksliteracy.org, or call (417) 616-0505 for more information.
