New Partnership Makes Newspaper Research Faster and Easier

A popular online research site provided by the Springfield-Greene County Libraries rolled out a new function that can save hours of time for any researcher.

A new partnership between the Library and Newspapers.com provides digital access to Springfield newspapers published from 1844 to present. Newspapers.com provides full digital access to newspaper pages including articles, obituaries, cartoons, and advertisements.

There are more just under 2 million pages of Springfield newspapers online now, and tens-of-thousands more will be added within the next year.

Using just a keyword search, or browsing by date, users can bring up the entire item as it appeared in the newspaper. Users can access the site from anywhere with a valid library card.

The direct link to the site is: thelibrary.org/springfieldnewspapers

Until now, only a portion of Springfield’s newspapers were fully available online. The alternative for researchers was to use and index and manually scroll through rolls of microfilm stored at the library. The library will continue to offer microfilm of past newspapers and microfilm readers.

The new digital access makes searching for an obituary or an article, and capturing a photo so much faster and easier.

“We’re providing 21st century access to historical records. It expands the ways the public can connect with records,” said Brian Grubbs, manager of the library district’s Local History and Genealogy Department.

Using the curser, users can drag a box around an item in the online version of the newspapers. The system allows for users to easily print or save the item to their computer.

“I am very excited to bring this expanded access to Springfield’s newspapers to our community,” Grubbs said. “While not every newspaper is available at this moment, we will be working with Newspapers.com throughout the next year to get them online.”

People can check back with the website regularly to see what has been recently added.
