Never a Dull Moment at Library this Summer
Stumped for something to do on a hot summer day with the family?
Have some relatives or a few grandkids coming to visit and looking for something fun – and free?
Fun and free is our specialty, especially this summer with the music, comedy and science performers at various branches for the kids’ summer reading program. On June 11, the Skinny Improv is on tap at 6:30 p.m. for teens at the Library Station. Midtown Carnegie Branch is throwing a Block Party from 3-5 p.m. July 17, for all ages. And the Sunday live music concerts continue on six dates this summer at the Library Center and Library Station.
There’s something happening across the 10 branches every day, no membership fee or registration required. Pick up a free copy of the Bookends program schedule at any branch library, or find it on thelibrary.org Programs link. It has an online, day-by-day listing, too.
Want to chill out in front of some free movies? Across the district we’ve got 36,393 DVDs, and 3,128 movies, documentaries and instructional films available for checkout.
We also have 23,542 music CDs to check out for fun or to go with a special theme party this summer.
Prefer to listen to books on a long car or plane ride, or a camping trip? We have 24,841 audiobooks and Playaways. Playaways is one of the newer audio formats for checkout. It’s like an MP3 player that’s preloaded with a single book. You provide one AAA battery and the headset – or we sell ear buds for $1.25. Just press start – no need for a separate player.
Books – we have 381,168 available for checkout; additional ones are for reference only. We also have about 500 newspapers, newsletters and magazines.
And we have kids’ toys. The library checks out 390 items including puzzles and other games that build motor skills, eye-hand-coordination while kids are having fun. Need some quiet-time activities, or craft ideas? Check out KidSpace, a link from thelibrary.org main Web site.
On TeenThing at thelibrary.org, teens have their own Web site full of recommended reads, comics and Anime, duct tape projects, sports topics, teen writing and lots more – all free online.
Finally, need a volunteer job this summer to broaden your circle? The library can use you. For details call 616-0580.
