First Chapter Books

Moving into chapter books is an exciting time for new readers. The library has resources for parents to use with their new readers to help them practice newly acquired skills.


There are several chapter books series that are great for growing readers as they move into a new format. These chapter books offer simple text and include illustrations and have storylines appealing to grades 1 through 3. The amount of text varies with each series and title.  They are found in the Juvenile Fiction section of the Children’s Department at each library branch.  If titles are not available at your home branch, you can make a request with a librarian or online.



As your readers become more comfortable with chapter books, try these series, which have more text and longer stories.



In addition to these series, there are several recommended resources available online:


  • Scholastic publishes a variety of beginning chapter book series under their imprint, Branches. There are multiple genres, perfect for introducing readers to fantasy, humor, scary stories, mysteries, and science fiction.
