Kidcasts: Podcasts by and for Kids

KIDS

SKILL BUILDERS

Podcasts aren't just for adults! There are high-quality podcasts produced for, and in some cases by kids. Kids want to pursue their interests just like adults. Podcasts provide them with a chance to learn more about something they enjoy. Podcasts are a great way for kids to engage their other senses (without screens) and experience music, stories, science and news. For kids who struggle with reading, podcasts, like audiobooks, provide a new outlet. Finally, research shows that listening leads to better learning. A study conducted by the Audio Publishing Association showed that listening increases reading accuracy, improves comprehension and fluency and even increases motivation.

Check out some of our recommendations below. Visit the kidcast websites or search for them on iTunes, Soundcloud or Google Play. For more ideas about podcasts you and your kids might like, visit Zooglobble, a review source for children's music and podcasts.

  • The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian - He can't sleep, he can't shake the feeling someone is following him, and he can't stop the monsters who show up to smash his cake. In other words, it's turning out to be more exciting than he expected.

  • April Eight Songs & Stories - An original fairytale podcast series for the whole family.

  • But Why: A Podcast for Curious Kids - Kids ask the questions and the producers find the answers; everything from nature, words and more.

  • Book Club for Kids - A place where young readers meet to talk about books. The show includes a celebrity reader and an interview with the author. The host is award winning public radio journalist Kitty Felde.

  • Ear Snacks - A podcast for kids about the world: Andrew & Polly and their friends consider music, science, art and culture.

  • KidNuz - KidNuz is the brainchild of four veteran broadcast journalists who believe that kids deserve a newscast all their own; one that delivers current events in a kid-friendly package, sparks curiosity, and gets them asking critical questions. Together with parents and teachers, KidNuz engages kids on issues that are relevant to them. Or soon will be.

  • Little Stories for Tiny People - Original audio stories aimed at toddlers and younger. Many last no longer than 10 minutes.

  • Peace Out - Short stories that help children calm down and relax by guiding them through visualization and breathing exercises. Perfect for parents or teachers who want to teach mindfulness and self-regulation.

  • Saturday Morning Cereal Bowl - A weekly music show for the whole family!

  • Tumble - Tumble is a science podcast for kids, to be enjoyed by the entire family. We tell stories about science discoveries, with the help of scientists! Join Lindsay and Marshall as they ask questions, share mysteries, and share what science is all about.

  • What If World - Each week, Mr. Eric takes a "what if?" question from a friend and spins it into a story just for listeners? What if a dragon appeared in my backyard?
