First Juneteenth

The first Juneteenth celebration in Springfield, sponsored by the NAACP, took place June 14, 1997. The event was held to remember the freeing of slaves and promote awareness of the Springfield branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Two students at State Teachers College, now Missouri State University, developed smallpox and the decision was made to vaccinate 200 students by the city health commissioner, Lon Sharp.
