Meramac Highlands, Missouri Depot
Creator:
Allen Johnson
Description:
The railroad depot at the resort called “Meramec Highlands,” two miles west of Kirkwood, Missouri. The resort was built in 1891 and featured a grand hotel, general store, and guest cottages. The railroad station, in the Romanesque Revival style of architecture, was built by resort owner, Marcus Bernheimer, to ensure access to the property. Twelve trains per day stopped at the station. The depression of 1893-97 adversely affected the resort, but it remained popular until the
early years of the 20th century. In 1913 Della Snyder became the first and only woman station agent on the Frisco line. The station ceased operations in 1932. (http://www.meramec-highlands.com/frisco.html)
