Volume 1, Number 7 - Spring 1963

Mrs. Agnes Cherry

I am now 82 years of age. My husband Wade G. Cherry, and I first came to Rockaway Beach (known in the olden days as Taneycomo) about 1914 or 1915 on a fishing trip. We stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Al Alms, who then lived on a farm at the mouth of Bull Creek. This farm later became known as the old McBride farm. In about 1918 we decided to buy property in Rockaway Beach and bought 6 lots in various places. We had operated a cafe in Kansas City but decided to retire to Rockaway Beach in 1917, just before we bought the lots.

My husband was born in Carthage, Missouri. He died in April 1928, and since then I have made my home at Rockaway Beach, and my sister, Mrs. Velma Kennard, now lives with me here. We have always been proud of the fact that she and I were baptized in Pittsburg, Kansas, about 1896 by Harold Bell Wright. We also knew Capt. Bill Roberts in Pittsburg. He was then a salesman, and he later went to Wichita and from there to Kansas City where he met his wife, Betty Robbins.
