Volume 6, Number 10 - Winter 1979

President's Message

You should read Viola Hartman’s story as soon as you get this issue. It explains far better than I can, the significance of the Hollister project. We are indeed fortunate to have such a dedicated member as Mrs. Hartman, who has spent five years of painstaking research, countless hours of interviews with old timers and historians, filled out stacks of forms and presented them to the proper officials, written reams of correspondence and publicity and when the project was finally completed, graciously and generously gave the White River Historical Society the credit and honor of sponsoring it. Mrs. Hartman is a charter member with continuous membership and in completing this historic "First," she has fulfilled one of the aims and purposes of the Society, as prescribed in its constitution.

I want to urge all our members to individually try to obtain more members of our Society. There used to be a slogan of some religious organization, "Everyone win one." I have given you the slogan I would like for you all to use this year: "If it is to be, it is up to me." That makes us all a committee of one to try to increase interest in our organization and to bring more members in and write articles of interest to our area. We have members scattered all over the United States, from Connecticut to California, who are interested in reading the activities and history published in our Quarterly. Do you know each Quarterly now costs us $1.25 plus mailing costs, and if we are to continue to publish four magazines a year we must increase our membership or seek outside financing? We are a historical society, not just a social organization, although we enjoy the social aspect of our quarterly meetings, nor are we a genealogical society, while we have several qualified genealogists who are glad to answer queries from our members. I believe every person who has family ties in this Ozarks region, every business and professional person who derives benefit from tourism, every new resident who has come to our area to live in our beautiful and peaceful atmosphere, should belong to White River Valley Historical Society. The cost is minimal and the rewards are worthwhile.
