Addiction and Recovery Resources

Where can I find addiction and recovery treatment services?

The Missouri Division of Behavioral Health (DBH) has programs around the state to help with substance abuse disorders. To help find a treatment program in Missouri for you or a loved one, you can begin your search here. The Missouri Division of Behavioral Health provides several resource directories covering certified health care providers; certified community health care clinics; specialized treatment programs for adolescents, adults, and women; and specialized treatment programs.

Behavioral health programs can also be found through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) national database of treatment services. FindTreatment.gov can direct your search according to distance, treatment type, payment options, age, specialized needs, and type of medication-assisted treatment offered.

To discuss your information needs and get a referral to a local treatment program or group, SAMHSA also runs a free and confidential helpline, available 24/7 every day. The telephone number is 1-800-662-HELP (4357) or TTY: 1-800-487-4889.

What should I ask when looking for the right treatment program?

Look for the five signs of quality treatment.

  • Accreditation: Is the program licensed and state certified? Are the staff qualified? Consider checking its inspection records and user surveys.

  • Medication: Does the program offer FDA-approved medication assisted treatment?

  • Evidence-based practices: Does the program offer treatments proven to be effective in treating behavioral health issues, including substance abuse?

  • Families: Are family members involved in the treatment process?

  • Supports: Does the program provide long-term, ongoing treatment and support beyond just treating the behavioral health issue?

Where can I find addiction and recovery support groups in my area?

The Missouri Department of Mental Health provides contact information for peer-run support groups organized by county and region here. You can also find local support groups through The Directory, a free database of local clubs and nonprofits maintained by the Library.

Does the Library have any resources on addiction recovery?

Yes. Browse a current list of books and DVDs on substance abuse treatment in our catalog.

How can I attend peer-run support groups while still practicing social distancing?

Before you attend in-person meetings, consider if you have been exposed to COVID-19 and stay home if you are feeling sick. When attending, make sure to wear a mask, wash your hands when you arrive and after leaving, and limit physical contact between group members as much as possible. Many groups are offering virtual or telephone access to meetings as an in-person alternative to limit the chance for COVID-19 transmission.
