Book Lovers Find Bargains Aplenty at Friends of the Library Book Sale

October 14, 2010 — The year’s main event for bargain-book and treasure hunters begins this week with the Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale, Tuesday through October 24 at Remington’s, 1655 W. Republic Road.

Items range in cost from 10 cents to $5 or $6 for better books, and we have enough to fill three tractor-trailer loads.

Experienced shoppers, however, know the main event has a wildly popular pre-event, the Friends Night Preview Sale. It runs 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, October 18. It’s reserved for the 1,400-plus card-carrying members of the Friends of the Library, who get first crack at the whole selection. (Membership is $5 annually.)

Again this year, the Friends will also admit people who want to join the Friends on preview night. But this year, Friends organizers have a plan to avoid the long lines outside that beset them in past years, says sale co-chair Jim Moore.

Prospective members and those wishing to renew memberships will be asked to pay the $5 fee at the door, but they will be able to fill out a membership application anytime during that night, 5 to 8 p.m., instead of causing a backup at the door.

If non-members don’t complete a Friends membership application or renewal that night, the pre-paid $5 will be considered a donation and will not apply towards a future membership, Moore said.

Not in a hurry? The Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale officially runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and from 1-5 p.m. Oct. 24.

As we like to say, it’s one of the most gratifying community recycling projects.

You donate the used books, CDs, DVDs and other materials all year to the library. The Friends sort, price and sell them at rock-bottom prices. They plow that money back into new books, free programs and library facilities – and soon a new bookmobile. And everyone gets some new treasures to enjoy – until the Friends Spring Sale rolls around in late April 2011.

The Friends of the Library spring 2010 sale hit $104,237.41. We hope you can help us top that this week.
