“Book Givers” Will Spread Love of Reading During World Book Night April 23

April 18, 2013 — Springfield and Greene County residents will be among the thousands of “book givers” giving away books to complete strangers across the nation during World Book Night on Tuesday, April 23.

World Book Night is a celebration of literacy by publishers, bookstores, libraries and individuals who love books and reading. U.S. libraries and bookstores have formed a nationwide distribution network to promote this literacy event.

Individuals applied in December and January to participate in the event. Book givers picked up their books this week at two distribution points in Springfield – the Library Center and Library Station.

Nearly 40 people have picked up their book bundles and will distribute free books at locations throughout the community, including the Park Central Square, Victory Mission, Missouri Hotel and Salvation Army.

According to World Book Night U.S., Springfield is No. 16 on its list of the top 25 World Book Night giver cities per capita with St. Louis, Mo., listed as No. 1.

“Bossypants” by Tina Fey, “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury and “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood are among the 22 different titles being distributed in Springfield and Greene County.

U.S. book givers handed out half a million books in 5,800 towns and cities in 2012. World Book Night is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, and a registered trademark of World Book Night Global. It is endorsed by the American Library Association.
