Enjoy Holiday Concerts Dec. 8 and 11; Learn About Smartphones and E-readers at Library Programs

December 6, 2013 — The Children’s Choirs of Southwest Missouri concert is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, in the Library Center auditorium. Several of the choirs plan to perform selections from “Holiday Prelude” in this event sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

If the weather is iffy, call the Library Center on Sunday after 1 p.m. at 882-0714 to make sure the concert will go on as planned.

By Wednesday, Dec. 11, , we hope conditions will improve for the 11:15 a.m. Holiday Horns concert in the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library. Come enjoy festive music of the season by the Springfield Symphony’s Brass Quintet. All ages are welcome and beverages and snacks will be provided. For more information call 862-0135.

If an e-reader is on your holiday shopping list and you could use some help sorting out all the options, drop by the Library Center auditorium at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9. Library staff will be available to explain the different types of digital devices used to read e-books.

We’ll have some of the most popular devices on hand for you to test drive. For more details call 883-5341.

After you get the e-reader that’s right for you, you can start downloading free e-books through the library. To download the software so you can borrow on your device, go to thelibrary.org/digital, and click on OverDrive. It shows available titles, but also explains how to install the software to your specific device and how to browse and check out a title.

Meanwhile, some of us are still learning what our smartphones can do. If you are, too, you’re invited to register for a free session on how to get more from your smartphone. The event is 7-9 p.m. Dec. 17 in the Library Center auditorium. The session is limited to 20; to register call 883-5341.

Russell Cellular and library staff will show you functions like settings, contacts, email and how to find and use all the apps available to you. Bring your fully charged device and your iTunes or Gmail login and password. Individual, hands-on help will be available.
