Kids Can Be Makers at the Library; DC Comics and Vertigo Now Available on Hoopla

July 2, 2015 — Kids are natural tinkerers and explorers, and the Springfield-Greene County Libraries have a free summer series especially for them. It’s a Maker Camp every Tuesday, July 7-Aug. 11 for ages 8 to 12.

In the style of the popular “maker movement,” the one-hour sessions from 6-7 p.m. at two library branches will inspire kids to play around with typical maker “stuff” such as tools and constructions, get their hands dirty making projects, fix some things, break some things and have a blast doing it. They’ll also go on virtual “field trips” to meet other makers.

The maker movement is a global, technological and creative learning revolution. Its tools and technology range from 3-D printers and robotics to wearable computing and “smart” materials. The library district was selected to participate in the Maker Camp program by parent company Maker Media, which serves the growing community of makers who bring a do-it-yourself mindset to technology.

Here are the dates and themes: Fantasy: Make:believe, July 7, Library Center; Funkytown, July 14, Brentwood Branch; Farmstead, July 21, Library Center; Fun & Games, July 28, Brentwood Branch; Flight, Aug. 4, Brentwood Branch; and Far-out Future, Aug. 11, Library Center.

Registration is required. To register or for more details, call 616-0526 or 616-0706.
