History: Read, Watch and Listen to it at the Library

July 8, 2015 — Folk musician Judy Domeny Bowen is a favorite of library audiences, and on Thursday, July 9, she brings the songs of the Little House books to young listeners.

Missouri author Laura Ingalls Wilder’s life was filled with her father’s fiddle tunes, from church hymns to ballads. Judy will share those songs for children in grades K-5 at 10 a.m. in the Willard Recreation Center; and at 1 and 2 p.m. in the Library Center auditorium.

Southwest Missouri historical and cultural materials are more accessible in the Local History & Genealogy Department at the Library Center after some recent changes.

The department moved closer to its goal of expanding its microfilm collection of southwest Missouri county newspapers. Staff purchased 195 more microfilm reels containing copies of some 15 representative newspapers. The issues range from the 1880s to the 1910s.

The additions are a boon for anyone doing historical and family research, says department head Brian Grubbs. If the library doesn’t have what you’re looking for, you can borrow microfilm from the State Historical Society in Columbia for a $2 fee. It’s shipped to his department for in-library use. But with future purchases of newspaper microfilm, Brian adds, “My goal is to provide a little more immediate access and a little more regional representation.”

Staff also created an Ozarks/Missouri DVD and CD display. Now it’s easy to find all the CDs in the Max Hunter Collection of almost 1,600 Ozark Mountain folk songs, or the DVDs of Ozarks Watch programs produced through the Missouri State University Ozarks Studies Institute. Care to watch all the games from the Kansas City Royals 1985 World Series? They’re on DVD, too.

Current issues of some 30 Ozarks and Missouri magazines and periodicals were also moved front and center near the study tables. Now it’s easier to find copies of Ozarks Living and Civil War Monitor magazines; Missouri Historical Review and the Arkansas Historical Quarterly, and more. Back issues of those and other periodicals are stored nearby.
