Wi-Fi Hot Spots Available for Check Out Starting Feb. 1; Swap Seeds with Other Gardeners Jan. 30

January 28, 2016 — Sprint Netgear Zing Wi-Fi Hot SpotNeed an Internet connection at home for research, a school project, to pay bills or apply for a job online? Taking a trip and want to stay connected? Soon, you can take Wi-Fi with you when you check out a Hot Spot from the Library. It’s our latest effort to bridge the “digital divide,” expanding possibilities for students and adults without Internet access.

Beginning Monday, Feb. 1, library card holders can check out a pocket-size Wi-Fi Hot Spot to use anywhere you go to connect your tablet, laptop and other Wi-Fi-enabled device to the Internet.

The new service saves money for anyone without Internet access. Even with your own Hot Spot, it still costs about $120 per month for Internet service, says the library’s IT Manager Dave Patillo.

Each of the 40 devices carry a simple how-to card inside the sturdy carrying case. Patrons can ask for one at the checkout desk of the Library Station, the Willard or Ash Grove branches, or reserve one via thelibrary.org/catalog, under “Hot Spots,” (or call a library branch) and have it delivered to another branch or Mobile Library. The device can be used anywhere in the United States, but coverage may vary, Patillo says.

Any age can check out a Sprint Hot Spot for three weeks, and renewals are permitted if there’s no waiting list. Late fee is 10 cents per day; the device will be de-activated 24 hours after the due date. Just return it to any library or book drop.
