Start Your Summer Reading Program with These Kick-off Parties!

April 22, 2019 — Blast off to a summer of great reading, with four programs for youth: Tiny Tots birth-2 years; Preschool ages 3-5; Kids ages 6-11 and Teens grades 6-12. Beginning May 17, register online at thelibrary.org/universe or stop by any Library branch or Mobile Library to pick up an official game board.

Be sure to attend one of these launch parties!  

Friday, May 17

  • 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Midtown Carnegie Branch Children’s Department, A Universe of Stories: Summer Reading Kickoff, for infants-grade 5. Check out some books, pick up your game board and celebrate the official start of the Summer Reading Program with fun activities! Call 862-0135.
  • 3:30-6 p.m. at the Strafford Branch Library, Summer Reading Blastoff: Rocket Science, for all ages. Blast off to a summer of reading with a rocket launch challenge. We'll provide a variety of materials for amateur engineers to test their rocket building creativity. Call 736-9233.

Saturday, May 18

  • 10 a.m.-noon at the Republic Branch Library, Summer Reading Kick-off Party! For all ages. Kick off a summer of reading fun with activities and crafts, then pick up your game board and check out a book to get started. Call 732-7284.
  • 1-3 p.m. at the Fair Grove Branch Library, Bluegrass in the Park, for all ages. Kick off the Summer Reading Program with an afternoon of live music by Red Bridge Bluegrass in the park behind the library. We’ll have space-themed activities made with recycled household products for kids. Bring a picnic for the family; no alcohol allowed. The concert will move indoors in the case of bad weather. Sponsored by Friends of the Library.
  • 2-4 p.m. in Tom Watkins Park, 2800 W. High Street. Summer Reading Kick-off Party and StoryWalk®, for families with children from infants-grade 12. Blast off into summer with The Library and Springfield-Greene County Park Board! Enjoy games, crafts, music, snacks, prizes and "A Frog in the Bog" StoryWalk®, and pick up your game board for the Summer Reading Program. Call 865-1340.
  • 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the Willard Branch Library, Summer Reading Launch Party! For grades K-12. Build your own space-themed snacks and watch "Wall-E," rated G, as we kick off summer reading with a "Universe of Stories." Call 742-4258.
