Friends of the Library Presents: Humorist David Sedaris May 1, 2020, at the Historic Gillioz

October 15, 2019 — With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers.

At 7 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2020, he will bring his brand of adult humor to Springfield when the Historic Gillioz Theatre presents An Evening with David Sedaris. Admission is free; tickets will be available beginning 10 a.m. March 4, 2020. Watch for details coming in 2020.

This one-night-only Springfield event is being underwritten by the Friends of the Library, and hosted by the Gillioz and the Springfield-Greene County Libraries. The author’s visit is part of The Library’s annual community celebration of reading, The One Read.

Sedaris will read from new and unpublished material, and entertain a 20-30-minute Q&A with the audience. His books will be available for sale, and he will sign books before and after the event.

“Sedaris ain’t the preeminent humorist of his generation by accident,” wrote
Whitney Pastorek of Entertainment Weekly. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, “Sedaris belongs on any list of people writing in English at the moment who are revising our ideas about what’s funny.”

David Sedaris was publicly recognized in 1992 when National Public Radio broadcast his essay "Santaland Diaries," which it replays during the holidays.

His nationally best-selling essay collection “Calypso” was published in June 2018, and a second volume of his diaries is expected in summer 2021.

His other books include “Theft By Finding,” “Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls,” “Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk,” “When You Are Engulfed in Flames,” “Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim,” “Me Talk Pretty One Day,” “Holidays on Ice,” “Naked,” and “Barrel Fever.”
