Premier Storyteller Gladys Caines Coggswell Speaking Feb. 28-29

February 3, 2020 — Gladys Caines Coggswell, author of “Stories from the Heart: Missouri’s African American Heritage,” is the featured guest of the Springfield African American Read-In on Feb. 28 and 29. Her visit caps a schedule special storytimes for children at the library branches in honor of Black History Month.

On Friday, Feb. 28, hear a storytelling presentation, A Feast of Stories with Storyteller Gladys Caines Coggswell from 7-8 p.m. in the Library Station Santa Fe Room.  

On Saturday, Feb. 29, participate in an interactive storytelling and sharing workshop, Developing and Telling Family Stories with Coggswell and apprentice Angela Williams from 9 a.m.-noon in the Springfield Art Museum community room, 1111 E. Brookside Drive.

The Saturday event is a workshop open to the public, and is appropriate for public school teachers, professional or amateur storytellers and young adults.

Both events are free and open to children through adults.

 Gladys Caines Coggswell is the recipient of the Distinguished Achievement Award by the Missouri Humanities Council. She has spent a lifetime gathering and telling stories she was told as a child by her great-grandmother that harken back to slavery times, and to ones she’s collected professionally about the life of African-Americans in Missouri.

The author’s visit is made possible with support from the Missouri Humanities Council, Springfield-Greene County Libraries, Springfield Public Schools, Missouri State University, Drury University, NAACP Springfield Chapter, and the Springfield Art Museum.

Join us to celebrate African-American literature and culture at these February Racing to Read Storytime events provided in conjunction with the African American Read-In.

Library Center Story Hour Room:

·       For infants-12 months: Monday, Feb. 24, 9:30 a.m.

·       For infants-36 months: Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 25-26, 9:15 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.

·       For infants-age 6: Monday, Feb. 24, 7 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 25-26, 11:15 a.m. and Friday, Feb. 28, 10:15 a.m.

   Republic Branch Library: Tuesday and Wednesday, February 18-19, 10 a.m. for infants-age 6.
