Library Has 27 Chromebooks for 12-week Checkouts

June 15, 2021 — If you have a library card from the Springfield-Greene County Library District, you can check out and go anywhere with a Chromebook for up to 12 weeks.

A Chromebook is a laptop computer that runs on Google’s Chrome OS, and anything you can do on the internet you can do with a Chromebook. They are different from a Mac or Windows computer in that files are not stored locally on the device, but in the cloud or on removable media.

It’s the library’s newest technology addition through a grant that also has provided 75 Wi-Fi hot spots for checkout and remote use. The goal of the additions is to provide community access points for more Wi-Fi users and Chromebooks for checkout. Patrons can also use the devices to access their telehealth services.

“The project embodies the Library District’s mission of ‘building a stronger community by enabling lifelong learning and enrichment,’” said Gay Wilson, the library’s planning and development librarian.

Library cardholders can request a Chromebook through thelibrary.org/catalog under “title” and Chromebook. Each one comes with a case, mouse, light on power cord (USB connector, wall plug) and instruction book. Hot spots are listed under “title” and Hotspot.

The hot spots and Chromebooks were supported by the Coronavirus Relief Funds Broadband Funding for Distance Learning and Telehealth in Libraries grant by the Missouri Department of Economic Development as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
