Summer Reading Clubs Offer Fun & Prizes for Kids, Teens and Adults

May 14, 2010 — The annual program encourages children and teens to continue reading through the summer to keep their skills sharp and their imaginations active. The more children and teens read, the better readers they become.

Babies and preschoolers can get involved, too. The more that adults read to these “pre-readers,” the more easily the little ones learn to read, says Nancee Dahms-Stinson, the library district’s youth services coordinator.

Summer Reading Clubs make it fun by offering incentives for eager readers.

Children from birth through fifth grade can get an official game board at any of the 10 branch libraries or the bookmobile. They win a prize each time they (or their parents) complete the required number of reading hours and activities designated on the game board. The most popular prize is the Food ‘n’ Fun Flipcard, which offers free or discounted items and admission offers from 34 businesses across Greene County. For details, go to

Kids can also attend a dozen free fun, wacky and educational live performances and workshops at many of the library branches, including “Nitro Joe’s Science Show” and the “Fishin’ Magicians.”

Teen readers in grades 6 through 12 can register for their own online reading club. After reading four hours, they can receive the Flipcard and be entered into weekly drawings for prizes including an iPod touch 8 GB. Details are at

And for the fun of it, adults can also win prizes while enjoying summer reads in their own club. They can write reviews on the Library’s online book catalog,, and enter drawings for great gifts through the summer.

“We’re doing this to thank our wonderful adult library users and to reward our avid readers,” says Library Center Manager Lorraine Sandstrom.

Participation is free and registration forms will be available May 22 at any of the 10 branches and the bookmobile. For more details about any of the three summer reading clubs and related programs, inquire at any branch library.
