Often overlooked in Civil War history, women played a crucial part, including the "Bushwhacker Belles," who risked their lives and freedom to protect and comfort the guerrilla soldiers who were their brothers, husbands and friends. Author and historian Larry Wood will discuss the brave women who acted as spies, go-betweens and guides, their clashes with federal authorities and what conclusions we can draw about why they fought like demons for those they loved. When the body of George Graham's wife was found on the Brookline farm of internationally known temperance advocate Emma Molloy in the winter of 1886, Molloy was placed in the center of a scandal known as "The Graham Tragedy." Connie Yen, director of the Greene County Archives and author of "Sinner and Savior," will use letters, court documents and newspaper accounts to trace the tragedy and ensuing scandal that all but ruined Molloy's reputation and career.
