1887
THE
CAR VESTIBULE APPEARS: The car vestibule, marking an
historical advance, appeared in 1887, strictly a Pullman
invention. Af first it merely enclosed a narrow passage
between cars, to be widened later to full car width.
It greatly enhanced comfort and safety. With twelve sections,
drawing room, and smoking room, high backed seats, mahogany
finish, much carving and ornamentation, higher windows,
rich carpets and upholstery, and increasing elegance
throughout, the Pullman was now blossoming into the full
glory of the later Victorian period.
