Late in the 19th century Methodist Episcopal circuit riders or Preachers were common in the Ozarks, holding services in school houses, brush arbors, and small churches in Taney County. Feeling the need of a place of divine worship, a meeting was held and this board of trustees appointed: T. T. Hyre, J. W. Young, and G. F. Rainey in the year of 1888.
In 1889 a warranty deed was made by James M. and Nancy I. Warren for one acre of land, in the N. W. l�th of the N. E. � section township 22, range 19, to be kept and maintained for Divine worship, granted to the M. E. church for $1.00 and paid in 1889.
There a beautiful white frame Church building was erected on this land which lays just south of the Helphrey bald, � mile north of the Helphrey Cemetary, where a log school house stood and where Sunday School was held on Sunday afternoons.
A Sunday School had been organized at Taney City by F. V. Baldwin. Richard Kilby was appointed superintendent. Nellie and Emily Kilby attended both and taught a class in each school.
Others attending were Emma, Bert and Jeff Stout, Lula Myers, Myrtle and Lula Henderson, John and Wesley Morrow, Aletha Dickenson. Anna and Walter Rankin went to both services.
Then on the way home from Literary Society at Taney City (now Dickens) one night a group of young people saw a bright light in the sky. It was the Methodist Church burning (1894). My mother, Emily Kilby Wilson, and Nellie Kilby Stout were in this group, and I have heard them tell the story many times, and how the Bible and the bell had been taken out and hidden in the woods before the fire was set.
Sorry I do not have a picture of this first Church building, but one is in the possession of the former Emma Stout.
In 1895 the Methodist people took the insurance money, little though it was, and built a parsonage in Taneyville, intending later to build a Church. They began to hold services in this, with good attendance as is shown by this picture taken in 1907, and several of the young people were at Roller that Sunday attending a children’s day program including Bert and Eunice Stout, and Katie and Myrtle Bonebrake, who were in the program. A picture of that group was taken the

same day, and one of them is in the possession of Eva Wilson Parmeter. But that is the story of the old log school at Roller where the Phillip Rollers, Dahl Hobbs, Jess Gildons, Pres and Pies Johnsons, Summertons, Rube Hammonds, Lora and Laura Parks, Dan Woods, Ruben Garretts, Tharps, Jim Caudles, and Alvah Wilsons families, and many young folk not mentioned. Groups from Garrison, Surrat, Bradleyville came to Roller for singings, revivals, conferences, etc., in wagons, on horseback and afoot, and how the hills did ring and echo with songs of praise.
The Methodists never did send a resident pastor to Taneyville, and for many years it was voted open for any denomination to preach, Presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist, and Christian more often than any other.
The Adventists used the old Chapel for services until they built their own church in Taneyville.
Here are some of the ministers in early 1900’s: F. V. Baldwin, Colonel Prather, John H. Bird, Rev. John Crockett, who would walk up on Saturdays, from the first School of the Ozarks, preach on Sunday, have dinner; then walk back to the School, Frank Stuart and Tom Osborn preached there. Sorry I do not remember the Christian minister’s name. Later a man named Tilley came once a month for two or three years.
Rev. U. G. Johnson, Almeda Britten, Daisy Manes and many others preached in the old Taneyville Union Chapel.
In the late 20’s Rev J. C. McCaslin and wife, Mary, came and stayed as resident Pastor and community worker. In 1931 Rev. Franklin Carter came and a revival was held in the old Chapel. Many new converts and re-dedicated lives were claimed for the Lord, followed by a large baptismal service in old Swan Creek. A church was organized and Franklin Carter was elected pastor. Mrs. Marion, (May G. Beall) as most remember her, was a mighty worker in keeping the Sunday School alive, prior to this revival. From the time they moved to Taneyville she took an active part, and was appointed superintendent for many years. Emily Wilson, Iva Morrow, Emily Leibhart, Maud Woods Clements were some of the teachers at that time.
May G. Beall, Emily Wilson, Sarah Cox, and Mrs. Koenig were leaders in many Temperance rallies and W. C. T. U. meetings.
There was a decline for a while, some of the leaders moved away, others left to seek employment, during this time Harriett Beall, Bertha Triplette, and Violet Redfern took over and kept the Sunday School going.
Jessie Clemons Bird was appointed S. S. Superintendent and still holds that office in the Sunday School.
Mrs. O. B. Rueter has taught the same class since the revival in 1931. Other present teachers are: Edna Williams, Beth Reynolds, Mr. Speak, Mrs. Albert Stromlund, and B. A. Edwards. Cradle Roll dept. was in charge of Dean Smithson.
Rev Hugh McInnis, Independent Fundamental Church of America Minister held regular services for about two years. Rev, and Mrs. Bill Flemming held yearly revival and Bible School.
Then Rev. Jimmy Powers came and did some work on the parsonage.
In the mid 40’s a remodeling job on the old Chapel was done—the sills were pulled in, porch torn, off and extended that much in length, new flooring laid, stuccoed outside, the bell lifted from the porch to a belfry, and new concrete steps poured. The work was all done by free-will offerings and many hours of labor by faithful members of the church. At first there was ample help, but at the last Mr. and Mrs. Otis Rueter finished the job, even to getting the bell into the belfrey. It was completed on August 31, 1945.
Mr. Cook of the American S. S. Union took part for a while. Classes were still being held in this one room, divided off by curtains. Then came the first resident pastor, Francis Henderson, who was ordained in the old chapel. The chapel became an organized I. F. C. A. Church. While Francis Henderson was pastor, it was voted and carried by the Church to build a new and larger building for worship.
In Oct. 1955 the I. F. C. A. church of Taneyville, paid $225.00 to a Dr. Frye, a Methodist representative in Springfield, Mo., for title to the land where the old chapel stood. The basement for the new church was dug in Nov. 1955, and forms poured, logs were cut and hauled to the Hires mill—sawing of the lumber was donated by Alfred and John Hires. By donated funds and labor and the great efforts of pastor Henderson the Church went up very fast. More donations and credit at the lumber yard and the inside was finished, many of the women and young people helped at filling cracks, putting on floor sealer, etc.
With freewill offerings, carpet runners and a folding door was added. Pews were made at the School of the Ozarks, and paid for with donations and freewill offerings, some families paying for more than one pew. A sacrament table to match the pews was given in memory of Mrs. Vanallen. Two Bible Classes, Beginner’s class, Pastor’s study, and Nursery room are all in the main auditorium. The other classes, kitchen, and fellowship hall are in the basement. Francis Henderson took a church at Medora, Kans. At the time of dedication, Rev. Charles Rogers was resident pastor. On August 16, 1959, Reverend Francis Henderson preached the dedication sermon, assisted by Rev. Floyd Hitchcock, and Pastor Charles Rogers and Rev. Hugh Molnnis. Next resident Pastor was Rev. Paul King, from Kentucky,

after about a year they left to take a Bible Church in Indiana. Evangelist Walter H. Jones was the next pastor who, due to poor health, retired to Jerico Springs, Mo., where he is now writing Scriptual booklets and tracts. Present pastor of Taneyville Union Chapel I. F. C. A. Bible Church is Rev. Albert Stromlund, who came here from Sheltering Hights Bible Camp, and from doing rescue mission work in Springfield, Mo. Last year, 1965, new cabinets were built in the kitchen, and the north and west side of the building stuccoed. This work was done by Paul Koenig and other volunteers. The new church still has the same old lectern from the old chapel and steeple from the re-modeled chapel.
