"Route 66— New Challenges in Local History"by James R. Powell

James Powell is president of the Route 66 Association of Missouri and vice president of internal auditing for Ralston Purina Company, St. Louis, Mo. The Route 66 Association is about two years old and numbers 500 members. Mr. Powell has been a leading member since the organization formed to preserve and promote the nation’s most famous highway.

Route 66 is a subject that most of us can well remember. The little two-pump gas stations and overnight cabins, although inadequate by today’s standards, bring back fond memories of travel in the past. Route 66 provided commerce and tourism on a scale previously inconvenient, if not impossible.

Society members and guests will arrive shortly after the noon hour to enjoy fellowship and lunch served by buffet or table service in the banquet room. College help is available to carry trays, so come join us for conversation prior to the meeting.
