PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I hope all of you are thinking about your final resting place-that is, the final home for your historical papers, maps and photographs. It is my hope to be able to add some Ozarks history to the other Ozark collections maintained by the Western Historical Manuscript Collection, University of Missouri-Rolla. I have a number of papers and letters, including mustering out lists of army men and several letters from governors to their cabinet members. Many of these are preCivil War period documents.
At this public facility, researchers can view and call for any other Ozark materials within the four-campus University of Missouri system. In recent years a significant number of Ozark papers have joined this premier effort in archives preservation for local history. Any other members interested in establishing a new collection should contact Dr. Mark Stauter, Director, at 314-341-4874, or write him at Room G-3, Library, University of Missouri, Rolla, MO 65401-0249. Our editor Lynn Morrow, who works at the state archives, can also assist you in establishing a collection in a public repository for materials that you wish to have available to future generations.
At this point in our history, we need to record everything possible while it is available; I know many of you have strong interests in this area. We are pleased to note the recent publication, The White River Chronicles of S. C. Turnbo: Man and Wildlife on the Ozarks Frontier, by the University of Arkansas Press, Fayetteville. This one volume selection of Turnbo manuscripts, edited by James F. Keefe and Lynn Morrow, contains the first textual commentary on that collection of Ozarks folklore and history.
Our Society may want to consider a project to further our collective efforts into the future. We should talk among ourselves to see if there is enough interest to establish a White River Valley endowment to ensure interest monies to support the Quarterly and, perhaps, other publishing efforts by the Society. If 20 members would pledge $2,500 each, we could begin an endowment as we plan for the future. There are already a handful who will contribute. Please call or write to me if you, too, are interested.
Please note two changes in the Quarterly: One, this Spring issue is #3 and #4, and we will begin the Summer issue as #1 and continue through #4 for Spring 1995. This will end our Quarterly year at our annual meeting when we elect officers and plan for the upcoming year. Two, please notice a $2.00 increase in dues voted upon by the Board in order to meet publication costs of the Quarterly.
At our June meeting we will hear more about the Society’s work. Until then,
