PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
by Lois Holman

It has been my pleasure to be president of the White River Valley Historical Society these two years.

Our aims have not been fulfilled, but a good start has been made. We need to increase our membership to stimulate wider interest. The pursuit of our collective experience in the Ozarks will bring ever new and fascinating information and a heightened energy in the new projects we have undertaken.

Participation of the directors from all counties is very important; these directors are our ambassadors for a growing Society.

Jerry Gideon, our incoming president, is doing research on a new enterprise for the Society. A great possibility is the renovation of the old historic jailhouse at the former county seat site of Forsyth. With some work, but not great expense, it can be made adequate and will be in keeping with our preservation goals.

Our hopes for a cooperative effort with the lady who had the large collection of depression glass was to no avail. There were several antique places interested and had more to offer than we could arrange.

We do have possibilities of a new home for our headquarters if the Old Forsyth jail building works out. Our next program will really take us back in time with the presentation by Sandy Primm sponsored by the Missouri Humanities Council on the H.R. Schoolcraft trip through the White River region. The recordings H.R.S. made have proved useful and controversial over the years as readers have struggled to imagine that Early Eden of Ozarks time.

See you in June with many new ideas!
