History Museum - Springfield, Greene County
New and old Ozarkers alike must come to the History Museum in Springfield! Whether you are doing research and need manuscripts and photographs, whether your interest is in artifacts, or whether you wish to view exhibits of the Historic Ozarks, you will find an experience that is rewarding and refreshing. While you are here you can tour one of the finest architecturally-designed limestone buildings in the Ozarks, listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Writers: the research collection contains over 30,000 books and documents, reference books, family papers, and maps. The photograph collection of over 20,000 images preserves landscape history of the Springfield area.
Exhibits: the museum has permanent and rotating exhibits that occupy over 3,000 square feet and present a cultural past from prehistory into the 1950s. Themes include Native Americans, pioneer life, Civil War, the Victorian Ozarks, World Wars I and II, business and commerce, and the Ozarks Jubilee. Children enjoy the hands-on items.
Artifacts: the museum has a large costume and textile collection of women’s and children’s clothing and accessories from 1830 to the present including quilts, coverlets, and linens. The more than 15,000 item list has excellent examples of antique china, household items, furniture, dolls and office equipment. These resources are used in rotating exhibits and for teaching purposes.
Historic Site: the museum is located on the third floor of the Springfield City Hall Building and easily accessed by elevator and stairs; two-hour public parking is available in the adjacent Government Plaza. The Building, a former United States Custom House and Post Office when Springfield was a city of 22,000, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1994. From 1938 to 1992 it was home to city government.
