J. Vernie Hicks Compiles Herndon Cemetery Inscriptions

Ozark County Times

May 27, 1972

J. Vernie Hicks, an Ozark countian now living in Springfield, has compiled information on the old Herndon Cemetery and on inscriptions from the headstones there.

Lying along a county road about two miles north of Almartha near Spring Creek, the cemetery, long a public burial ground, was deeded in 1897 to the public by S. C. and Lucinda Herndon for the use of the "inhabitants of Ozark and Douglas counties."

S. C. Herndon, who died in 1897, several months before the deed was registered, was buried in the cemetery which now carries his family name.

The first burial in Herndon Cemetery with a dated stone is of John W. Orcutt, January 14, 1868-March 24, 1870. "But it has been said that several were buried there before and during the war between the states," Hicks reports.

There are 214 known graves in the cemetery, 138 with headstones and 76 marked with rocks. No estimate of the number of unknown burials has ever been made.

Here is the headstone inscription information compiled from the marked graves by Hicks:
