Captain James R. Vanzandt was born October 1, 1824, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Hamilton County. He died March 10, 1920, at Kirbyville, Missouri. He was a veteran of the Mexican War and fought in the Florida War. During the Civil War he was in the Battle of Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge and Chickemauga and Chattanooga, Tennessee, and then was in the Battle of Wilson Creek at Springfield, Missouri, when General Lyons was killed. He belonged with Company K, 24th Missouri Regiment, and after the war was a Circuit Rider for the Methodist Church, then living at Fordland, and he moved to Kirbyville in 1879, and served in the State Legislature from Taney County. He was made a Captain during the Civil War. He has a living daughter, Missouri Ann Alexander, of Kansas City, Missouri, and a granddaughter, Mrs. (R.F.) Myrtle Michel of Kirbyville, (now deceased) Taney County.
