Lucile Morris Upton, a charter and honorary member of our society, was the recipient of the 1978 Ozarks Heritage Award given annually by the Museum of the Ozarks of Springfield. This presentation was made at the Museums Benefit Dinner held at the Holiday Inn on March 27, 1978.
This award is sponsored by the Museum of the Ozarks and is given each year to an individual who researches, records and/or preserves Ozarks history.
Mrs. Upton writes the "Good Old Days" column which appears each Sunday in the Springfield paper. Her book "Baldknobbers," which tells of bands of night riders organized to bring peace and order to the hectic strife of the Ozark hills, was first printed in 1939 (second printing 1970). She has also written a booklet entitled "The Battle of Wilsons Creek."
In 1964 Lucile was elected to honorary membership in the White River Valley Historical Society. She is also a member of the Greene County Historical Society, the Missouri Writers Guild, Missouri Press Women, and the National Federation of Press Women. While, a member of the Springfield City Council (1969-1971) she sponsored an ordinance which created the Springfield Historic Site Board of which she is a member. In 1967 she was named Springfield Woman of Achievement and was a member of the Bicentennial committee when our country celebrated its 200th birthday.
When the assembled audience gave Mrs. Upton a standing ovation it is reported that she remarked--"It is a privilege to live in the Ozarks when one can have such wonderful friends."
