King
by Mrs. Loren Roden

Nampa, Idaho July 3, 1914

Dear Susie.

Thinking it might be of interest to my children when I’m gone to know more of my early life and history.

I’m writing a sketch for your information.

My father George W. King was born in the State of Ohio in 1816. My mother who was Caroline Stubblefield was born in Lime Stone County, state of Ohio in 1818. They moved to Barry County, Missouri in the year of 1837. I was born in Barry County, Missouri on November 3, 1842.

My mother had three sons; Joseph, George and Richard and two daughters; Jane and Rebecca.

My mother died in the year of 1845.

Father then married Malinda Vermillion by whom he raised eight children. But one Mahala, died in infancy. The rest all lived to raise families.

I enlisted in the Union Army the first time in April, 1861 and the second time June 20, 1861 and the third time May 10, 1862 and was finally discharged August 27, 1865 and arrived home September 1, 1865.

Your mother’s maiden name was Elizabeth Langston.

We were married January 4, 1866. Our first child born; Richard was born June 10, 1867 and only lived six weeks. Then Grant, born July 15, 1868, Rebecca, Charlie, Ida, and Susie all born to this union. I don’t have birth dates for all.

We lived in Stone County, Missouri until March, 1870 and there until I moved to Jenkins, Missouri in Barry County April 6, 1897. We moved to Idaho in covered wagons, we arrived in Idaho August 9, 1897 and as you know your Mother died the 23rd of March, 1912 and was buried the 23rd of March 1912 in the Twin Falls Cemetery near Twin Falls, Idaho.

Written by your father,
George R. King
