The 1880 census of Taney County, Scott Township, shows my grandmother as Elizabeth DeJurnette, a widow with two children, William and Eurith. She married my grandfather, John Allen Raines in December 1880. They later moved to Lowry, AR., where she was a midwife until her death Ca. 1913.

They have indexes to county histories, maps of Ohio, Ohio Census Indexes for 1820-1850, city and county directories, Tax List Indexes for the, early 1800’s, Rosters and Veterans’ graves Registration File, Guide to Ohio Newspapers from 1793 to 1973, and an abstract of county records.

Your Secretary thanks the many members who sent Holiday Greetings and the many kind remarks. They were sincerely appreciated.

Member Dorothy Ackerman, an ardent researcher, again asks the group for assistance. She writes, "The Missouri State Archives at Jefferson City has some old school records for Taney County from the 1886 to 1918 period on microfilm and will search them for specifically named persons if enough information is given them.

The problem is this: The person I seek lived at or near Walnut Shade and would have attended school there from about 1891 to 1900, after which time they moved to Kansas. One source of family information suggests that the surname possibly was BRIGHT (BRITE), although she later used great grandfather Smith’s surname. To date there is no found evidence of adoption, but no question that she was raised in great grandfather’s home for a time. Her given name Golda, born in July of 1885. Since there is no extant 1890 U. S. census I don’t know how long or when this person came to live with the family. The 1900 U.S. census (Kansas) where they moved shows her as a "daughter", age 15 living in the household.

I do not know the legal description where great grandfather, Asa G. Smith lived, but at the time of his last marriage to Isabelle St. Clair in May of 1887 his residence was recorded "of Walnut Shade". Some of his other children attended the old school that is by the Meadows Cemetery. I believe this building is now used as a church or community meeting place. Great grandfather's first and second wives and several of their infants are buried in the Meadows Cemetery Perhaps this information will help pinpoint the school most likely attended. The U.S. census for 1870 and 1880 show that he resided in Jasper Township.

Could you please tell me where a list of the schools around Walnut Shade during the 1891-1900 period would be found? I note Mr. Ingenthron’s book "The Land of Taney" (Pg. 361) includes a map, locating the schools in Taney County in 1912. The following appears in the probable area. #46 -Flint Hill, #49 -Walnut Shade, #50 -Meadows, and #51—Pleasant Shade.

I would appreciate any lead anyone may be able to give." Dorothy Ackerman, 9608 N. E. 198th, Bothell, WA., 98011

And Dorothy adds this super paragraph for our pleasure. "I continue to enjoy the quarterly very much and am so pleased to be a part of this organization. It appears a new "burst" of interest and a healthy increase in membership is occurring. I think that is just great! I only wish I lived closer or that it was possible to be there for an occasional meeting. But alas! I will have to be content with observing from afar it seems.

Information wanted on John Reeves born about 1811 in New York by Mrs. Loren Roden, Shell Knob Route, Cassville, MO., 65625. He was married 12 April 1838 (recorded in Green County, Mo. marriages), Eda Taylor born about 1815 in Tennessee. Was John son of William

M.Reeves? Who were Eda’s parents?

An old letter dated 1858 from Rocky Creek, Goddon County, Georgia, from T.M. Henson to Virgil Henson states: that my old grandfather, Willian Henson and six brothers came from Virginia to North Carolina. All seven brothers served in the Revolutionary War; all seven brothers married sisters, Holder women, the sister married Jacob White. Information is wanted on this family by Ruth Asher, Route 2—Box 158, Galena, MO., 65656.

"I am researching my Butler line, who came from around Blue Eye, Mo. and Oak Grove, AR. writes Connie L. Hayes, Route 2, Box 140, Holt, MO., 64048. I received a letter and some information about a Butler family who lived in this area at the right time. One of the items was a will published by The White River Valley Historical Quarterly, Summer 1975, Vol.5, No.8. It was the will of Elias Butler, of Carroll County, TN. His wife was named Sarah. Their sons: John, James M., Elias, Joshua and Neally -daughters: Mary Butler Queen, Judah Butler Boyd, Elizabeth Butler McAuley and Sarah Butler Boyd. The date the will was signed was February 1838.

From other sources I have the name Neely or Nathaniel Butler as my great, great, great, great, grandfather. There is a question mark beside the name, because they don’t know for sure. This grandfather supposedly was married to an Anna Wheat. I’m trying to find out where my sources got this information as the location of this Butler’s Barrens is exactly where my ancestors came from.

My third great grandfather’s name was Johnathan Wesley Butler, who married Rosaline Matilda Ayers. He was born in Tennessee in 1821 and death was 1854 in Denver, AR. It is Johnathan Wesley Butler’s father and mother that I am trying to find. I’m thinking that it is this Nealy, since they were in the right place, and another source had mentioned Nealy as his father.

Neely had a famous descendant— Lyndon Baines Johnson, former U. S. President. Neely’s daughter, Melissa Ann married George Washington Baines in 1840 in Carroll County, AR.

My question: Is Johnathan Wesley Butler the son of Nealy Butler? If you have any members in your society working on the surname Butler, would they please write me? It would be greatly appreciated."
