This inquiry comes from Vera Quirico, P.O. Box 609, Alamosa, CO, 81101: Who is researching her family tree and would appreciate bearing from anyone who knew any of the following Drake. who lived in Protem, Missouri, from 1892 until after 1910.

Richard J. Drake and wife, Amanda, had children Benjamin, born 1876; Flora born 1878; Cora born 1663; Warren born 1881; Andrew born 1885; Cleveland born 1887; Thomas born 1889, James born 1891; and Allie born 1895.

Richard J. Drake was her great grandfather and homesteaded in Protem in 1892. He sold his place in 1907 and later left the area. Does anyone know where any of the Drakes relocated?

William J. Drake (her grandfather) was the eldest son of Richard. He married Woodie Lavina Moore in 1880 and moved to Protem, raising his family there. William and his family moved to Oklahoma around 1910, except Edward, who remained in Protem.

Effie G. Wilson. Also interested in Fergusons and Harlan relatives who went from Kentucky to Missouri around the same time.

New member Mrs. Lee G. Knox, 1213 Amherst Drive, Denton, TX., 76201 sends the following story and query; "Some time has been spent trying to track my gt-gt-grandmother. I know that my grandmother was born in Stone County in 1870. She lived to be 93 years young. My great grandfather changed the spelling of his name (or had it changed for him) and called himself William Patrick Cavner. We think he was born in Tennessee in 1847. He, too, lived to be over 90. He married Mary Frances Hurst on 12 March 1868 in Stone County after he had been on the Union side in the Civil War.

My mother said that she remembered her grandfather would stop to see them on his way to visit his mother in Stone County. His mother, Winnie Cavender died in 1912. Although records were kept by that time they were unable to find hers. Lucille Christman found a list of all Stone County cemeteries and found Winnie in the Mollie Wright Cemetery.

We made a trip to Stone County in August of ‘79 and, with the help of a map, found a neat cemetery. There was Winnie’s stone broken and in with the Estes family, a name that meant nothing to me.

The next day we went to the Christian County Court House. There we found that my gt-gt-grandfather that I had been calling William T. Cavender was Timothy Cavender. He died soon after the Civil War and left a debt his poor widow - had to assume. The Court House burned and she was ordered to bring in all her records so they could charge her for his debt.

I have found my Cavner family in the 1870 census of Stone County but still no Winnie. Her son, my great grandfather, moved with his family to Texas about 1872. My last find has been in the marriage records. There I found one John F. Estes married Mandy Mancrey Jane Cavender (of Christian Co.) in Stone County on 6 November 1866 by William Steele, M.G. This explains why Winnie was in the Estes plot of the M.W. Cemetery.

I didn’t say this story has an end - I’m still searching and now know a new path to take. The 1900 Stone County Census should give me a story on Winnie. I must still have family right there in that area. But time is my enemy - I need help."

"I grew up around Ava over sixty years ago and would enjoy more articles from that area," writes Lawrence E. Paugh, 2219 Edsel Lane, Modesto, CA, 95351

(Are you reading, writers & historians of Douglas County?)

Mrs. Archie Kissee, 11499 Hwy 99E, Los Molinos, CA, 96055, writes that she hopes that they can come back to Missouri sometime and attend one of our meetings. They both were born here and get homesick to come back. Have made it once in 45 years. Then she adds this query: need information on great aunt, Margaret Boothe Coffey, daughter of Matt and Agnes Boothe. She and her husband left Missouri and moved to Canada before 1920.

Mrs. Kissee also wants information on any of the children of John E. (Bridge) Boothe. He was a brother of Margaret Boothe Coffey. His first wife was Alice Workman. After her death he married Irene Cantrell. Would like to know about any children or any thing else about this family.

Need information on great grandmother Pernila (Nila) Wilson Burchett of Stone County, Mo., & CA 1852. Father Bob Wilson was a Civil War Veteran. Sister Effie married Jim Cline and there was a brother Bobby.

Also grandfather William Green Stacy married Anna Ewing 6 Mar. 1881, Protem, MO. Her parents were Jessie Ewing and Emily Palmer. Anna had a sister, Julia who married Bud Roberts and a brother, George Ewing. Need Ewing family information and will answer all letters says Mary Johnson, Star Route, Box 20, Vian, OK. 74962.
