President's Message
This is the 20th Anniversary of the founding of the White River Valley Historical Society. The first meeting was held on June 25, 1961 at The School of the Ozarks and Elmo Ingenthron was elected the first president. In the first quarterly the president’s message was a stirring challenge to us to preserve and perpetuate the historical heritage of our area and to communicate that heritage of the past to the present and future generations.
This is the last time I shall write you as your president as my term of office will soon end. The past three years have been a thrilling and rewarding experience. I came to the office without qualifications or experience, a comparatively new member, living many miles from the White River Valley, but with ancestral roots deep in these hills. All of my ancestors, as well as my husband’s came originally from Virginia, following the traditional "Ridge Runners" route across North Carolina, Tennessee, Illinois or Arkansas to Missouri, eventually locating in Stone, Christian, Taney and Ozark Counties. So, my lack of experience was balanced by unbounded enthusiasm and abiding love for the land I call "HOME".
I am grateful to all of you who have so loyally supported me and guided me in the performance of my duties; to the officers who have been so faithful and supportive in every way; and, to the many people who have responded to my requests for contributions of material for our quarterly. The quarterly is the lifeblood of our society, the element that binds us together. It is up to all of us to do "missionary work" in behalf of our organization, remembering the Slogan:"IF IT IS TO BE, IT IS UP TO ME".
