Headstone Inscriptions Compiled for Lutie Cemetery Part II

Lutie Cemetery, dedicated in 1867 by James and Mary Jane Friend, bears the name of the old Lutie community settled during the early 1860’s.
The settlement was named Lutie in 1893 by first postmaster, Lucius P. Vernon. Vernon named his post office for his young son.
Lutie remained the name of the post office until 1960, when by popular request it was changed to Theodosia.
The old Theodosia post office, founded in 1886 had been abandoned to the rising waters of Bull Shoals Lake in 1951. The name, given this post office by first postmaster, Tully D. Kirby for his daughter, was transferred to the government dock on the lake.
As the recreation industry grew in the area, so did recognition of the name Theodosia, until citizens of the area decided to change the name of their post office from Lutie to Theodosia.
Now the old Lutie settlement is recalled by the name of the cemetery and the school district serving the area.

Located Northwest of Sparta on Highway 125 about 2½ miles from Sparta. This cemetery was originally in the side yeard of an old two-story home, which has now been torn down. The property on which it is located is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Joe Humble and is adjacent to their barn yard. It is surrounded by a neat rock fence.

Bessie N. "Betty" Ingenthron of Kirbyville died December 5, 1984 in Skaggs Community Hospital, Branson, MO. Survivors include her husband, Elmo; a son, Chandis, Ozark; one brother and one sister.
She was active in several historical and genealogical societies as she had much interest in these two groups. She was a charter member of our society.
Services were held December 11 with several members of the society in attendance. Heartfelt sympathy is extended to the family.
Condolences are also expressed to member, Mrs. L. C. Gerow, Kansas City, MO, in the recent loss of her husband, a native of Taney County; to the family of member, Marybelle Pruitt; to member, Archie Kissee, Los Molinas, CA, in the loss of a family member; to members, Clyde Davis and Irene Milton, in the loss of their brother; to Lucille A. Brown in the loss of a cousin; and, to member, Barbara Deakins, in the loss of her father.
