Volume 8, Number 11 - Spring 1985
We had a great winter meeting with a good crowd. It was our first meeting in the Banquet Room of the Friendship House at The School of the Ozarks which is an excellent place to get together with friends for Sunday dinner before the meeting. The young essayists did a grand job. They are all ninth graders. You will be reading their essays in future issues of the Quarterly. Dr. Robert Gilmore, our guest speaker, told us of entertainments in the Ozarks, pre TV, when they were nearly all of the "do it yourself" variety. He was very humorous while being informative.
During March, Dr. M. Graham Clark hosted a luncheon for the WRVHS Committee to Register the Steamboat Landing at Forsyth, Mo. Our speaker was Dr. Robert Flanders who explained how to register an historical monument but more importantly he identified the urgent need for locating items important to our local history before they disappear with the increasing density of our population. He recommended that we inventory all the old cabins, farm buildings and other examples of life in the Ozarks, after which we can evaluate and register the outstanding or unique items. Without this first step of recognizing what there is, we cannot proceed to preserve and interpret our local history. In this way we can all make a contribution by looking around us, listening to people remembering and making notes on what we see and hear. This would appear to be a good project for our society.
