Transcribed by Bill and Vera Wood, Strafford, Missouri The Past In Review … News items from the Taney County Republican, published in Forsyth, Missouri every Thursday by B.B. PRICE and S.J. WILLIAMS. Lawrence CARROLL was editor and the subscription price was $1.00. per year, in advance. The issue of November 28, 1895 was the first, and this paper is still being published today. The date of the paper precedes the news items appearing in that issue.

Dec. 26, 1895 - Johnson School District-
The school closed the 19th of this month and we had a box supper to raise money to get lamps to light the school house. It brought in $4.50.

Circuit Clerk, J. C. JOHNSON and Mrs. JOHNSON took their Christmas dinner at Taneyville and were guests of Mr. & Mrs. W. SIMONS, Postmaster and Merchant.

The members of Hilton Post #254 G.A.R. were greatly disappointed in being prevented by Swan Creek’s sudden rise, from attending the bean soup dinner.

Ex-sheriff John L. COOK, of Swan, lost seven of his largest hogs when Swan Creek rose so rapidly on Dec. 18th. A quantity of Mr. COOK’s fence rails were also washed away.

Mr. & Mrs. Pleas JOHNSON of Bradleyville spent a couple of days the first of this week visiting Mr. JOHNSON’s parents. Mr. & Mrs. J.C. JOHNSON. Mrs BUNCH accompanied them to Bradleyville.

Jan 2, 1896 - Mr. G.W. WINEIGER, who comes from Tennessee, has bought 40 acres of land from Esquire J.A. THOMAS of Kissee Mills and has commenced to build on the land. Mr. WINEIGER has a wife and three sons and all are well satisfied with Taney County.

Taneyville Items--Mrs. Seymour TRIPLETT died Dec. 23rd, after a short illness. The funeral was conducted by the Revs. SPITZER and ROGERS.

J.N. Hilton Post #254 G.A.R. will hold a special meeting Jan 13, 1896. All members of the Post are invited to attend a bean dinner at Kirbyville Sat. Jan. 11th. S.W. LINZY, Post Commander.

Charley DIPLEY’s new blacksmith shop is nearly ready for use.

Kirbyville - Died at the home of Judge LINZY, Dec. 18th, his son Walter, 13 years old, after a two month illness. He leaves his father, four brothers and two sisters.

Jan. 9, 1896 - - Kirbyville News - - -Mr. John McAVERY, bro-in-law of Judge LINZY, has bought the old STILES property, later known as the FULKERSON property.

Mr. Wm. HENSLEY got his ferry running last Saturday week. It is reported that there were 35 freight wagons on the North side of the river, ready to cross. Mr. Wm. HAWKINS was making preparations to raise his cable Monday.

Mr. T. Bert STOUT of Taneyville is now running a drug store and barber shop.

Jan. 9, 1896 - Mrs. Alice BURNAM, daughter of Thomas F. LAYTON, contemplates going to Dallas, Texas, where her sister Mrs. McAVOY lives.

James CALDWLL, Charles & Elliott PLEAKE, all enterprising men of Kirbyville vicinity, went to Forsyth Monday to pay their taxes.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, January 11th, the G.A.R. gives a free bean dinner to all who furnish a plate, spoon, and a cup for coffee.

Twenty pounds of good sugar for only One Dollar, if you call on Jim BARKER, at Stires’ Store.

Esquire M .J. SMITH of Brown Branch died Sunday of pneumonia. He was prominent in his own neighborhood and well known throughout the county and enjoyed the respect of all who knew him.

News from Protem! G .W. THURMON, formerly of Forsyth, is doing a rousing business as city cobbler, with the barber business as a side line.

Mr. H.G. LAUDERS is back from eight months in California. He has brought back a quantity of the "raisin" grape cuttings. Also Tokay and the Rose of Peru, also figs, peaches, etc and will test the merits of the raisin and wine grapes in Taney County, which of course will be a success.

Johnson School District News . Born to Mr. & Mrs. John SAMPLE, Jr., on January 4th, a daughter.

Jan 16, 1896--Mrs. J .O. CARROLL presented her husband with a young son on the 12th of January.

James B. IGO, Homestead Application #12830, Sec 24, Twp 24N, Range 17W, Witnesses: Wm. U. STURMAN, John ATKINS, Frank SHUMAKE and General JOHNSON, all of Brown Branch.

Mr. R.E. MAXWELL of Macon, Missouri, spent several days in Forsyth this week visiting his sister, Mrs. W.M. WADE, whom he had not seen for about 12 years. Mr. MAXWELL has now gone to Douglas Co. and after paying his respects to relatives in Greene and Polk Counties, will go to Ft. Worth, Texas.

Mr. L. C. WALKER returned Monday from Boone County, Arkansas, where he had been visiting a sister, Mrs. T. A. COULTER, formerly of Cedar Creek. Mr. WALKER also found another sister, Mrs. Alma RUBLE, down with pneumonia, but she has since recovered.

There will be a Baptist Church house erected in Taneyville in the near future. A committee has been appointed to locate the site and have the building put up.

Mrs. Emily WILSON, formerly Emily KILBY, and her husband, are visiting Richard KILBY, Mrs. WILSON’s father.

Jan. 23, 1896 - Leonard WALKER, one of the pioneer farmers of Christian Co., and well known in Taney County, died last Sunday. He had almost completed his 84th year.

Mr. H.H. THOMAS, late of Tennessee and Mr. W.M. HUMPHREYS, from St. Clair Co., Missouri, were in town Friday. Both gentlemen have located near Kirbyville and are well satisfied with Taney Co.
