PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
CONGRATULATIONS! The White River Valley Historical Society is twenty five years old. It is a pleasure to see so many of the charter members still attending meetings: Elmo Ingenthron, Ruth Asher, Dr. Alice Nightingale, Dr. Lyle Owen, Edith McCall and Fred and Viola Hartman.
The program for the anniversary meeting will be one we can all participate in. It will be "Show and Tell." Most of us have something of historic interest we can tell a short story about. Bring it or a picture and we can learn more about the White River Valley.
The members of the Society have been very busy working on projects to preserve history. There are many books being written. Several projects are underway to register historic sites. A new Historical Society has been formed in Ozark County. On June 14 & 15 the Forsyth area will have a "living history Civil War encampment" and reenactment of General Sweeny’s 1861 Raid on Forsyth. Taneyville has reactivated their famous Picnic. The newspapers are featuring many articles on Ozark History including "Former Superintendent Marks School History" featuring Emmett Adams and "Local Attorney Still Practicing" about Douglas Mahnkey and fifty years of Missouri Courts. In addition there is an annual progress issue that features a large section of White River Valley History.
To start our next twenty-five years make this a special meeting. Be sure to come to the June meeting and bring a friend to help the Society grow in its second quarter century.
