PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
HELP WANTED
No, this is not the classified ad section. The "Help Wanted" lead is just a way of calling your attention to the fact that the White River Valley Historical Society is very often on the receiving end of requests for help.
Each issue of the Quarterly carries, in the "Bits and Pieces" section, queries from individuals seeking family, community, or historic information. And recently the Society has been asked to assist in a couple of projects that will not only aid local organizations, but will also provide favorable exposure for the Society, and make even more people aware of our organization and the work that we do.
One of these requests is from the Dewey Short Museum at the Table Rock Dam Visitor Center. They are seeking a display of articles and artifacts related to everyday life in the Ozarks of the t9th century. They have had such a display on loan from the Ralph Foster Museum, but it must now be returned to that museum. We have been asked to help because of our knowledge of authentic early Ozark life and our interest in sharing this knowledge with others.
The other request is from Silver Dollar City. Some 44 European craftsmen and musicians, from Germany, France, Spain, and the British Isles, will be featured at the Spring Crafts Festival in May. Those in charge of the Festival, who will be stressing the presence of the European visitors, would like to provide those attending the Festival with information about the European origins of those who settled the Ozarks. Again, the Society’s help has been requested because we have the knowledge and the resources to provide this authentic information.
I am encouraged to have these opportunities for the Society to fulfill one of its major objectives, to "disseminate historical information and arouse interest in the past... " Sharing history, especially the history of our beautiful Ozarks, is an exciting and gratifying experience.
