Larry T. GAYLOR, 5101 Green Valley Trail, San Angelo, TX 76904 would like to get in touch with someone who has information on the COOPER family who owned property on White River across from The School of the Ozarks. It is believed COOPER was a Major in Union forces during the Civil War. After his first wife died he married his housekeeper, Susan DOEKERY (maiden) SIZEMORE (1st marriage). Susan brought three sons and a daughter with her from Pea Ridge, AR near the end of the war. She owned a small cabin on Cooper Creek.
Her Cherokee first husband, Will SIZEMORE, was removed from his field by Union forces on March 6, 1861, two days before the Battle of Pea Ridge of March 8, 1861, never to be seen again. Their field was on the southwest corner of the battlefield and is now a part of the existing Battlefield Park. Susan became "GRANDMA COOPER" to her and shared several stories of her past. One of the grand daughters wrote some of them down in the early 1900s. Too late to perserve Major COOPERS first name or confirmation of earned or honorary title of Major.
Like stories in oral history, some think he was a Colonel. Family did visit GRANDMA COOPER from Colorado, Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri until her death. Her daughter, Mary Ann Texas SIZEMORE, married Campbell Maynard "Doc" GAYLER, Son of Calvin and Cassandra GAYLER. One of Susans granddaughters, Margery (Gaylor~I HUDSON, lives in Riverton, KS and visited the area with me in 85 and 86.
Other children of this GAYLER marriage are deceased. "Doc" GAYLER remarried and has three children living from the second marriage.
These three sons and Margery plan to attend a family gathering in Branson in October.
If Major COOPERS first name was known, Federal records of his military service could be checked and a more detailed accounting of our families invplvement could be recorded. Any help greatly appreciated.
