Two Cemeteries in Arkansas

JEFFERSON CEMETERY
This old cemetery is located just in the edge of Yellville, Ark. The late Dr. L. M. Weast told me Col. Jefferson came here very early, while the town was still inhabited by Shawnee Indians, took up several hundred acres of land along Crooked Creek, and began this cemetery on his farm for his family and slaves. There are many graves not marked, most of the graves are covered with big flat stones with the inscriptions chiseled on them. It is in a lovely setting, having big shade trees and ivy covered graves.

1. Rufus A. Jefferson
1825-1856
inscription chiseled on native rock: "In memory of Rufus A. Jefferson,
son of Thomas and Charlotte C. Jefferson, was born in Iredell County, N.C.,
died in Yellville, Ark.'
2. MARTIN
1. Rachel C. Martin (In 1850 census I find Rachel and her twin sister Charity
living in Thomas Jefferson's household)
1831-1857
Inscription, chiseled on large flat rock covering grave.
"In Memory of Rachel C. Martin, daughter of Cole and Nancy M. Patten, wife
of John M. Martin, she was born in Rutherford County, N.C. 21 January 1831,
died in Yellville, Ark. 12 November 1857"
A tall gray spire marks these two graves,
it is a bought stone.
MILUM
1. Elizabeth Milum, wife of Brice Milum Born in S.C. 15 February 1824
Married 9 November 1840
Died 5 April, 1862
2. Thomas D. Milum, son of Brice and Elizabeth
b. 15 Jan. 1842
d. 20 May 1863
(An old issue of the Mountain Echo, the weekly county paper had an article telling
of Thomas D. being wounded during the Civil War and was placed in hospital in
Little Rock, he was so home sick his father went after him in a buggy and brought
him home, and buried him in Jefferson Cemetery by his mother)
WIMBERLY
1. Elizabeth Wimberly who departed this life
25, 1857.
VANZANT CEMETERY
Long abandoned, located in Section 28, Township 18 N. Range 16 W.
This old cemetery has not been in use for many, many years. It is about 6 miles south of Yellville off of State 14 So. Located on a hill top in a beautiful grove of trees. Old timers tell me this Samuel Vanzant owned the farm and ran a grist mill and gin from a large spring there. This spring now furnishes Yellville's water supply.
