The Butterfield Overland Mail leaving St. Louis for San Francisco. The four-horse Concord coaches carried passengers as well as mail.
This comes from "Missouri", a catalog issued by the Library of Congress in 1971. It depicts the Missouri exhibition in the library of Congress honoring the Sesquicentennial of Missouri Statehood. The catalog may be purchased from the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Printing office Wash. D.C. Price $1 .50.
Phillip Steele has prepared and printed a little booklet "The Butterfield Run, Through the Ozarks." It gives a history of John Butterfield’s Overland Mail Company and Its Route through the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks. John I. Smith operated one stop station some seven miles west of the present Crane, Missouri.
